Too much excess, little success

Back after a great weekend in Liverpool, I was a bit anxious going as I knew nobody at the wedding but it turned out to be a fantastic day, everyone was really friendly and made me feel very welcome. I think I might have felt a little too welcome though and really let my hair down, and enjoyed a good few pints throughout the course of the day and night. It was a late night too seeing as we had an early start on Friday flying to Liverpool.
I also met Sarah's parents who were absolutely lovely and I was delighted I got the chance to meet them. They are coming over in October to cheer on Sarah in the marathon so it was really lovely to meet them before then.
The next day we were again up early and did a tour of Liverpool city Centre on foot, before heading back to Sarah's parents house for a cup of tea and upload some photo's of the wedding onto the net, Sarah's parents were kind enough to drop us to the airport which we really appreciated as we were both very tired.

Anyway back to Dublin and our run on Sunday, having done the 3 miles on the Thursday before we left and feeling very tired and lethargic after the weekend away we knew it was going to be a struggle to do the planned 12 miles, but we set out none the less.
I had calculated that the circumference of the Phoenix Park starting at the gates on the North Circular Roads and taking the North Road all the way around onto the Ordnance Survey Road into the furry Glen and all the way back around was just over 6 miles. So we had planned to do two laps of the park taking a slightly shorter route on the second lap.
As we set out on the first lap and the long stretch around the north road, I knew it was going to be more difficult then I had first anticipated.
We had stupidly left our drinks back in the car and I was already regretting it 20 minutes into the run. I desperately needed a drink already.
We ploughed on though but I was feeling very tired and very thirsty. The whole lap was a real struggle to be honest as it was a lot hotter than we'd first thought and the lack of water was doing us no favours at all.
We decided as we approached the last hill on the first lap that we would stop at the car and get our drinks.
We quickly made our way back to the car and nearly devoured the whole bottle of water in one go. We did a bit of light stretching and mulled over the next lap. At this stage we were both very tired and probably a little dehydrated and with no water left for the second lap we decided to call it a day. I was very very disappointed as I was really looking forward to breaking the 10 mile barrier, but I suppose it was a more sensible approach.
I guess I can just put it down to experience, you learn a lot along the marathon journey and this was one valuable lesson I won't forget.
So back out again tonight for the short runs. Hopefully no more hiccups.

Well, the excesses of the drink dooes us no good at all. I know the feeling :).

What kind of pace are you running?

Hi Liam,

We are currently running 9.5 - 10 minute miles. Won't break any records but our aim all along was just to finish, it would be nice to do it in less than 4.30 but won't be too disappointed if we don't.

Off the drink now until after the marathon so won't hear any more excuses out of me.
